FAQ's

What is a PEX plumbing system?

When formed into pipes, PEX, or cross-linked polyethylene, is a flexible, scale/chlorine-resistant, noncorroding alternative to traditional metal or plastic pipes that is actually easier to install and requires fewer connections and fittings. Not only that, but PEX plumbing is energy efficient, has greater resistance to freeze-breakage, features quieter water flow and doesn’t develop pits or pinholes.

What is a tankless water heater?

Rather than utilizing a bulky, leak-prone storage tank, tankless water heaters heat water directly in the pipe as it flows through the unit, delivering a constant supply of hot water. Available in both gas and electric, tankless water heaters can boost energy savings by anywhere from 8% to 50%, depending on water usage and number of units. While tankless water heaters usually cost more upfront than their counterparts, Energy Star estimates that a typical family will save $100 or more per year by installing an Energy Star qualified tankless heater.

Why is my toilet leaking water?

Toilets leak for all sorts of reasons, like worn out washers, bolts and gaskets; failing floats or fill valves; obstructed overflow tubes or even cracked tanks and bowls. Some of these issues are a small fix, while others mean that it’s time for a new toilet. Depending on your DIY prowess, you can handle it yourself or you can have a highly skilled, experienced technician from Younger Brothers Plumbing Company take care of everything from troubleshooting to repair to installation and get it right the first time.

When is it time to call in a professional for a clogged toilet or drain?

Whether the culprit is too much toilet paper, hair or other foreign objects, we’ve all had to deal with a stubborn clog. When using a plunger, it’s best to find one that is appropriately sized and to make sure there is enough water in the bowl or sink to cover the cup. If that doesn’t work, another option is a plumber’s snake (a.k.a. toilet jack, electric eel), which is a long, flexible auger that is fed into the pipe through the drain. If you don’t own a plumber’s snake and have no plans to buy one, or you do have one and it didn’t clear the clog, it’s time to call the professionals at Younger Brothers Plumbing Company.

Do I have the skills to fix a leaky faucet?

Most homeowners, armed with the right tools, can fix most leaks caused by worn out washers, gaskets or o-rings, but if the issue is more serious, like corrosion or mineral deposits that have compromised internal parts, a new faucet may be needed. DIY enthusiasts may choose to tackle old faucet removal and new faucet installation all by themselves, but if you’d like to save time, hassle and be 100% sure the job is done right, the experts at Younger Brothers Plumbing Company are ready to help.

Do you have any tips on how to choose the right garbage disposal for my home?

Once you have a garbage disposal, you never want to live without one again. Not only are they convenient timesavers, but they cut down on kitchen odors and help keep cooking areas sanitized. However, not all garbage disposals are created equal, so it’s wise to consider these 6 important points when shopping:

Horsepower – How much food waste do you produce? If you don’t cook often or are cooking for a small family, a unit with a 1/2 horsepower motor should do. If you cook every day for a larger household, you will want to step up to a 3/4 or 1 horsepower motor.

Noise Level – The noise produced by a garbage disposal has more to do with the manufacturer and model than it does with horsepower, so it’s important to know which ones will produce an acceptable amount of noise for your home environment.

Grinding – Continuous feed models are designed to grind, as the name suggests, continuously and for long periods as you work. They function best in households with greater amounts and variety of waste and take up more space under the sink than batch feed models, which grind batches of waste in short bursts.

Blade – For households with less waste, a spinning blade is the ticket, but for those with larger amounts, an oscillating blade is best at breaking down sizable clumps quickly.

Warranty – The best garbage disposal warranties include coverage for all vital parts (chamber, motor and blades) and in-home service.

Installation – Batch feed garbage disposals are generally easy to mount and can be installed by most DIY types, but continuous feed models will most likely require a professional.

What is causing the ‘sewer’ smell in my house and how do I get rid of it?

Plumbing odors have many causes and are usually, but not always, minor and easy to fix.

Clogged Vent Pipes – When the intake vents for your plumbing system (located on the roof) become clogged by leaves, nests, balls, etc., the blockage will eventually result in water being sucked from the sink traps (located in the plumbing beneath the sink), allowing sewer or septic gasses to escape into the home. The best fix is to remove the blockage and run more water into the trap.

Backdrafting – Dry sink traps can also be a problem in the presence of an exhaust fan, which can actually draw septic or sewer gasses up the pipe and into the bathroom, which is another reason it’s important to run water into dry traps and make sure your bathroom has sufficient fresh air intake.

Cracked Pipes – If bad odors persist even after you’ve covered the bases listed above, you may have a cracked drainpipe either in your home (constant smell) or underground outside (intermittent smell). Either way, this problem is going to require a professional.

I’ve heard that some plumbers can install natural gas lines in and around my home. True?

Yes! Younger Brothers Plumbing Company’s own highly skilled, certified natural gas plumbing technicians perform underground and wall installations that are guaranteed compliant with all current code and safety standards. From internal applications like water heaters, dryers or furnaces, to external utilizations like fire pits, BBQs and pool heaters, each site is meticulously evaluated and appointed with a comprehensive installation plan.
